Found this interesting article today linked from theonering.net. The article, from the 'style' section of the July 2004 issue of Sunday Times Magazine, was obviously written by a fellow Legolas fangirl, and comes complete with a lovely hobbity illustration borrowed from 'The Theban Band'!

I love reading articles analyzing the culture and reasonings behind the writings of slash fic. I can sit and read these things for hours, it's so fascinating...plus, it gives me good logical arguments to use to justify my reading and viewing habits. My dad and my brothers know I read slash and watch QAF, and they thought I was nuts at first, but the 'guys-like-watching-girls-go-at-it-with-each-other-so-why-can't-I-watch/read-guys-do-the-same?' theory made sense to them, so they don't give me any grief about it now. They don't really need to know how deep my emotional responses to slash fanfic actually go. *G*

How cool is that?! Hope she got permission to use the pic :-)

I agree full. I am fascinated by articles from slashers or about slash in general. I really like the point she made about exploitation there at the end. In my gender & technology class we talked a lot about internet porn and women's roles in it. And I've always found it interesting that the things many women prefer (like romance novels) is very passive and doesn't involve the same sort of, er, use of humans. Not that I dislike male porn. I'm amazed at many women involved in it.

Oh, and I was laughing at the part where she talks about giving it to her significant other. My ex-boyfriend had a similar reaction. And even when he expressed interest to read some of my stories and was glad it was my "thing" he never really actually read the stuff and laughed whenever I mentioned it because he didn't really see how Gimli and Legolas could be shagging. And yet, he reads playboy and insists he KNOWS it's all staged and airbrushed and all that. I've used that explanation you gave your dad and brother, though. It seems to make sense to men. But as a woman I need emotion with sex. I need backstory. I need feeling. Maybe that's more of a writer instinct than a woman thing, but that's what gets to me. And it's nice to read something by someone who explains that so well.

I just... it's so interesting. The fantasies and things that interest different groups. Personally, I'm much happier to be a slasher :-) But, yeah, I could go on for hours and hours. I won't. I just wanted to thank you much for posting that! :-)
