|Update! So I'm building a house...

It's been a shamefully long time since I last updated this journal. For that, I apologize. It's not like I've been terribly busy most of these months. To sum up: I worked as usual, made a couple trips to Indy, ate at Steak and Shake more times than I should have, bought the She-Ra DVD set (yay for childhood nostalgia!) and the Extended Edition of Kindgom of Heaven (far superior to the theatrical cut, and some damn fine acting from Orlando), and took in 3 showings of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. My POTC ruminations may or may not ever find their way to a LJ post, but suffice it to say that I found Dead Man's Chest to be not as good as the first, but that I found Will Turner to be sexier than ever! Other than that, my life was same-old, same-old...all spring and summer long.
I'm building a villa. I have a steady job at the same place for the last 3 years, no signs or thoughts of changing that job, and I'm tired of paying endlessly on an apartment and building no equity for the future. Plus, I have no garage, I'm limited on the number of cats I can have, and I have to try and stay quite at night when I'm up and everyone else is asleep. So I found this cute section of classy-looking villas about 5-6 minutes from my current apartment. A villa offers me all the benefits of a house (I'll own the land and the building and not share walls or driveway with any neighbors) with none of the outside work. I'm lazy, and I freely admit that. Plus, I'm a night owl and my skin hates the sun. I'm thrilled at the chance to write one check a month and have all the grass and plants tended, all the leaves raked, all the snow shoveled, etc. for me.
I've put money down on a great little lot on a decently-sized manmade pond/lake, so all the views out the back of my villa will be gorgeous. I've spent days touring various models and pouring over floorplans and pondering options until my head spins. The builder I'm working with is a custom builder, so they're designing me a plan based on a combination of the best features of two plans that I liked certain aspects of a lot. Mega-thanks must go out to sirenprincess and her husband for visiting this past weekend and giving me amazingly helpful ideas and advice. The blueprints I was presented with today are a direct result of some of their comments and ideas.
I'm starting to freak out a little now though. It's SO much money that it's making me very nervous. I loved the plan they came up with for me, but it's about 2400 square feet, which is over 400 square feet larger than the original plan I was looking at, and so it's thousands of dollars more expensive as a result. I can borrow and budget for it, but it means I'm going to have to be a lot more careful picking out tile and cabinets and various other features and upgrades to stay in a reasonable price range. Plus, I will have to come up with money for furniture and a fridge and washer and dryer along the way too, and that's not included in the plan cost.
Plus, it's all moving so very fast. I just started looking at homes a couple months ago, and had decided on this villa complex about a month ago. I have another meeting with the builders later this week to fine-tune the layout and then I need to meet with a mortgage broker and get a construction loan. Then I'll have to make umpteen million design choices about the color and type of tile, walls, fixtures, carpet, window blinds, ceiling fans, electrical outlet locations, pre-wiring for high speed internet access and a possible home theater system, and the list goes on and on. I'm not terribly good at making decisions, so what might be a fun design process will invariably end up stressing me out some. Maybe I should just hire an interior decorator or something...
*takes a deep breath*
Anyway, if I break ground soon and survive the stress and decision making processes, my villa should be done sometime in January. Wish me luck!
