I miss Star Trek...*Sigh* [Jan. 6th, 2006|06:03 am]

Well, this is interesting...

I'm back in Star Trek fangirl mode for the first time in years, probably since they offed Jadzia Dax and replaced her with Ezri Dax (Why did you have to leave DS9, Terry Farrell? Why? Was 'Becker' really a better career choice? *sniff*). ST:TNG was my first obsession (4-5 years), and DS9 remains my longest hardcore obession to date (6 years), other than Star Wars of course, which has been a constant presence in my geekdom since I can remember but which only really took over the number one obsession spot during the months immediately following TPM. After DS9 broke my heart, I switched to X-Files, and then to Stargate SG-1 when XF went downhill and lost Mulder. Then, in late 2001, a little Kiwi-made flick called LOTR:FOTR blew my mind and has held my unwavering intense devotion ever since...4 full years now and going strong. In the mean time, I had a lovely side affair and mainlined all of Farscape in a matter of a couple months. Farscape is an awesome show, but LOTR still has my #1 spot. Even LOST, in it's prime during season 1, couldn't change that.

However, with the lack of new LOTR material, and with good new LOTR fic diminishing in quantity, I find my self reminiscing more and more about previous fandoms. And thanks to recent discussions and icons on LJ, and a really fascinating fic plot bunny, I've rekindled my love for DS9. It's the 'Empire Strikes Back' of the Star Trek series for me, with the best writing, most meaty storylines, and most multi-dimensional characters that grow and change in logical ways; and yet it's always relegated to the 'middle child' slot in a lot of people's minds. Not to mention that I ADORE Jadzia Dax, with all of my heart. She was and still remains a role model to me...incredibly intelligent, a scientist, loyal friend, gorgeous, capable warrior, amazing sense of fun and humor...in short, everything I wish I could be. Of course, it doesn't hurt that she, like an overwhelming number of my favorite characters, is not human and has lived/experienced far, far more than her appearance might suggest.

Which brings me to the episode that my Tivo so thoughtfully recorded for me today. 'Equilibrium' is the episode where Jadzia learns that the Dax symbiont had a brief, hushed-up encounter with a renegade host named Joran Belar, a murdering psychopath that happens to be a pretty decent musician. This episode is so full of H/C goodness, it almost makes me want to burst with happiness every time I watch it! I remember jumping for joy in my basement the first time I saw the preview for this episode (I did the same thing for season 2's 'Invasive Procedures', the symbiont-stealing episode with just about the most amazing Jadzia/Julian comforting scenes ever!).
This episode has it all...angst, concerned and loving friends, expanded character backstory, the Trill homeworld, illness in the form of dropping isoboromine (yes, I remembed it without even needing to watch the episode, and damn, that really makes me think of Boromir now too...*G*) levels and symbiont rejection, vulnerable and scared Jadzia, and that beautiful scene where she goes to Julian's cabin on the Defiant for comfort because she is nervous and can't sleep and he tells her a sweet personal story and she calls him 'a very dear man'. I was melting every other minute during my rewatch of this episode. Damn, if only Legolas had some H/C this good in canon, then I could die happy...*sigh*

Anyway, I wouldn't say that LOTR has been bumped off it's pedestal, but I'm definitely going to be exploring some more ST fic options in the near future. Just in time for my dad to give me back all those TNG and DS9 videotapes I made over all those years!
