Dude, I've got a Dell! [Aug. 27th, 2005|08:03 am]

My new laptop is here! *insert sounds of rejoicing*

Yes, my friends, I bit the bullet and purchased a replacement for when my slowly dying Compaq (running Windows 98, and with a faulty video card, broken printer, and monitor that's on the fritz) finally kicks the bucket.

After much deliberation and shopping, I ordered a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop off their website and had it customized to the hilt so that it won't be obsolete in a year or two. It has: a Pentium M 760 processor (2 GHz/2MB Cache), 1 GB of RAM, a 100 Gig harddrive, CD/DVD burner, built in Wireless card, 17-inch UltraSharp Widescreen display, and an awesome 256MB NVIDA GeForce Go 6800 video card so I can play virtually any game I want without any problems. Even more potentially cool, it runs on Windows XP Media Center edition and I bought a tuner to hook up to my TV so I can record shows on my laptop and then burn them to DVD! I hope this works, because if it does, I'll never have to buy another TV series again. I hope to test this Sunday, and try to record the first episode of 'Rome'.

My lovely new computer came Friday morning, though I didn't have a chance to unpack it until last night. I then spent a good several hours getting the feel of it, configuring programs and playing with the default wallpapers, screensavers, etc, and playing the built-in pinball game. I won't get to use it for the internet until I get a wireless router, probably not until Wednesday after my week of work. My first new computer in almost 6 years...I'm so happy! :)

Thank you! It's a thing of beauty...and it's amazing how much more I enjoy using the computer now that I can actually see all the colors and pictures on web pages. Not to mention the ability to surf from the comfy couch while my kitty sleeps up against my leg. :)

*adds congrats* Yay, Jen! And it's been an excellent experience being there every step of the way.

I say, though, you could use the Internet with it right now. You just need to plug in the modem to that computer instead of your other computer. Really! ;)

I am so grateful for all your help and advice along the way (and I have no doubt I will continue to utilize your advice again in the future). I'm posting this using the laptop and one of the several readily available unprotected wireless networks my neighbors have so generously made available to me. *G*

I stayed late at work tonight, and spent a lot of time getting all my Security programs installed, all the Windows Updates, etc, so I didn't really get a chance tonight to mess with the TV tuner. I need to sleep now, but hopefully I'll be able to drag myself out bed soon enough so that I can play with it before work. I really don't want to miss out on 'Rome' tonight.

hey jenny...did you hear the news? I got promoted...to Manager at the Joliet, Illinois store. This of course means that I will be moving out of mom and dad's to somewhere in the southern Chicago area.
